It’s been a long time coming… to say that the last few years of being a Michigan football fan, a Michigan native, and a Michigan alumnus was painful would fall short of being an understatement.  And to think that I had it bad as a student where it was a perfect season with a Rose Bowl win or bust.  The way we got to the Sugar Bowl was certainly not the way I wanted, nor was the win all that comforting- but a win is a win, and a BCS bowl win at that.  To say that every team that has won a BCS bowl game deserved it wouldn’t fall true, and it is certainly debatable whether we really deserved to be here in the first place.  But when life puts you in a good place and your life is on a winning streak, you don’t ask questions… you get up and run with it for as long as you can because a losing streak is inevitably right around the corner.

10/14/2011: Water Fountain/Fall/Sculpture that stand between the Green & Meyer Libraries

On Friday, with the perfect-as-can-be weather, I couldn’t help but sit in front of this water fountain/fall/sculpture (I’m not quite sure what it is, or what to call it) and give it a good 30 minute stare.  It was relaxing, and pretty to look at- much more soothing than any books I’d have to go through today.  So… I cut my studying short and went up to the city to hang out with Jileebean who was in town for James’ wedding.  It was the first time I put on jeans in 3 weeks- I wasn’t sure if I was sad that my no-jeans streak had ended… or that it lasted 3 weeks.  Either way, it’s over.

Will coincidentally had a friend visiting from New York as well, so we took them to a couple bars in the Mission district.  Neither of us (Jean & I) could stay out too late, so we called it a night relatively early.  Like I’ve commented before, it’s always nice to see somebody from your hometown and a friend you’ve known for a long time.  It was also a welcomed break from studying, and I enjoyed my first beer in several weeks very, very much.

We designated Labor Day 2011 as, wait for it… Suburbia Night!  We headed down the peninsula to Malibu Grand Prix for some batting cage action and miniature golf.  The batting cages reminded me of high school when the fobs used to go to a batting cage in Michigan, making bets on how many balls you can hit over the cage.  The biggest bet however, was who could throw the ball and make it into the hole that the ball shoots from.  The rule was that everybody had to pay the winner $5, but nobody ever made it.  Seems like it was just yesterday when I sat on the rail and started planning for the annual fob camp… now we’re all old, boring and too busy for our own good.

april 30-may 3, 2009

my third and last trip of april was back to ann arbor to watch the last group of kids i went to school with graduate, and also to visit old college and high school friends.  i usually visit AA twice a year, once for graduation and once in the fall for a football game.  however, i skipped the fall visit last year due to a dismal football season.  that made it the longest time i’ve been away from michigan since high school when i was living in korea.

one of the first thing i noticed as soon as i stepped outside DTW was the awesome clean air.  i’ve never noticed breathing ‘clean air’ until this week… i guess it’s hard to explain what it feels like, kind of like explaining what good water tastes like… but it was a very refreshing.

in a nutshell the trip constituted a lot of beer, food (a lot of no thai in particular), friends, not enough exercise, not enough pictures, and not quite enough no thai.

it’s always nice to see old friends and familiar places, and this trip was no different.  i got my fair share of michigan with going out to bars with locals, visits from my high school fob friends, trip to novi for ahjishin, trip to downtown AA and of course the graduation ceremony at the big house.  i only wish i drank less and took some more pictures… -_____________-;;

i’m looking forward to some more refreshing air when i visit again in june for the alumni conference.

it only seems like yesterday you were a frosh… now you’re just, old
