It’s been a long time coming… to say that the last few years of being a Michigan football fan, a Michigan native, and a Michigan alumnus was painful would fall short of being an understatement.  And to think that I had it bad as a student where it was a perfect season with a Rose Bowl win or bust.  The way we got to the Sugar Bowl was certainly not the way I wanted, nor was the win all that comforting- but a win is a win, and a BCS bowl win at that.  To say that every team that has won a BCS bowl game deserved it wouldn’t fall true, and it is certainly debatable whether we really deserved to be here in the first place.  But when life puts you in a good place and your life is on a winning streak, you don’t ask questions… you get up and run with it for as long as you can because a losing streak is inevitably right around the corner.

01/03/2012: Well, there goes eating healthy in 2012.... and drinking less beer. Aaron, "I can really go for some Jack in the Box tacos." Me, "Ooh, a Jack in the Box! Let's eat."

01/03/2012: Sugar Bowl @ the 'Stone with guest Michigan fans Will & Grace!

It’s not everyday you get to meet the governor of your home state, less a chance to shake hands and share a few words. I was a nervous reck when I introduced myself, but she was very personable from the start and really made it feel like she was just ‘one of us’- a feeling that many of us in the room shared. I was able to make a connection with her right away because she was the governor of Michigan during my college years, and I remember very clearly many of the events she shares in her book. It’s pretty hard to imagine being governor of Michigan during one of its worst decades… and I only have the highest admiration for her and her family (especially after reading the book). Many of her key points to improving the U.S. economy seems to be right on as well.  It’s easy for many economists and journalists, as observers, to make bold suggestions and predictions sine their words have no consequences.  Having been through the trench and experiencing “the toughest job” according to President Obama, I can’t help but respect what she has to say.

Luckily, I was a less nervous talking to the Gov and Dan after the event, even cracking a joke while they signed several books for the Alumni Club that we had to start with the most important book, mine. We then took several pictures with the board, then some by myself. It felt like I was standing there for an hour, and I got really nervous again just standing between them for so long.  I guess it showed in my face because one of my board members asked me to smile, so I replied, “I can’t because I’m super nervous right now.” They got a good kick out of that too. Best wishes to Gov Granholm and Dan, Go Blue!

12/11/2011: With the amazing Governor Granholm and her wonderful husband Dan Mulhern. Can you sense my uneasiness?

12/11/2011: Gov. Granholm kept on referring to me as Mr. President, and I would giggle every time.

As part of Earth Day as well as Michigan Community Service day, the AAUM headed down to Half Moon Bay to pick up trash at one of the beaches.  They were surprisingly (and somewhat disappointingly) really dirty!  There was trash everywhere and our bags got full really quick.  Some went back for second bags… I… was content with just one.  But to be fair, it was one each of the recycle bag and the trash bag!

Look at all that trash!

After all our hard work, the group headed over the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company close by and enjoyed some drinks and appetizers.  The beach clean up was really a great event.  It attracted a mixture of alums, and who doesn’t like walking up and down the beach on a perfect Saturday morning?

The lucky alums who came out to help clean the beach!

Obama Ale! Yes.  I tried it. Yes.  It was good.

As I was about to leave, I got a call from WJ hyung asking if I wanted to go to HMB!  When I told him I was already here, he said they were heading to HMB Brewing Co., haha.  Instead of sitting at the table by myself for 30 mins while waiting for them, I hit some balls at a nearby golf range and came right back to start part II of HMB.

Understandably crowded.  ME: Can I make reservations outside?  HOST: No.  But you can make rsvp for indoors.  ME: (Walk indoors) Can I make rsvp for 2:30pm?  HOST: No.  We only accept rsvp in at least 2 hrs advance.  FAIL.

More beer!

And lots of food! Don’t you hate those people that say they’re not hungry… but end up taking a little bit of everybody’s food?  Yeah… that was me today.  I wasn’t hungry, but everything looked so good!

Food.  Gone.

We headed out to a “secret” beach after dinner to enjoy what was left in the day.  I’d tell you where this beach is… but you know…

THIS is how EXCITED Ahsome was to be at the secret beach.

“I’m on a horse”- this reminded me of the time Aimee wanted to go horseback riding in HMB, but the horse people said we couldn’t because the horses were tired that day… -______-

Good bye for today HMB…. we’ll see you again soon!

Jeanne pulled of a surprise wedding and few of the Michigan alumni board members were invited to celebrate with her and her husband at their new home in the east bay.  I haven’t been to the east bay in a while so it was nice to be out in the ‘country’ away from the noise of the city.  Her home was especially away from any city and in the middle of the forest.  To me, it looked like a house out of a movie with floor to ceiling glass walls on a hill overlooking a forest.  To boot, they had an awesome game room downstairs and even a bocce ball court!

A very pretty house!

Bocce ball!

Thanks again for the invite! Wishing you guys years of health, wealth, happiness, fertility & longevity ^_____^!

1. i did not know you were supposed to fundraise for the aids walk, i thought you just walked to show support.

2. i did not know it was 10k, i thought it was a couple miles.

3. 1 + 2 made it for a very interesting and loooong sunday morning.

fortunately, a few awesome people (and much smarter than i) raised well over $1,500 for the AAUM team.  i was there for the moral support- and the breakfast.  walking 10k was no joke, the streets were lined with entertainers, supporters, and you couldn’t ask for better weather.  the walk raise over 3.5M dollars.

entertainers

thank you for the moral support, man in the brightest pink hat ever, aka phil.  will was also here, but missed out on seeing him

there were LOTS of people here

AAUM walkers got these awesome wrist bands

i finally got to revisit the california academy of sciences today after failing to get in on opening day.  i’m not sure if any other museums around the country offer this, but CAoS has something called “nightlife” where the museum essentially turns into a big lounge on thursday nights.  i didn’t get to drink much because i was busy taking pictures, but i can see how this place could be a much more interesting venue for a happy hour, as opposed to regular-old bars around the city.  the event was through the AAUM, so we also got a couple of special perks like reserved tickets to the planetarium and skipping long lines into the 4-story rainforest.

lots of fish here

floating around without cause or care… actually, maybe there is a cause… who knows?

it’s gill from nemo!!! (sans the scar)

CAoS’ signature albino alligator

budweiser frogs?

lots of lighting

inside the rainforest, the floor was made of glass- you can see people walking underground where you got to view the tank from the bottom

underground… that is not a black wall behind us, but a tank full of fish

these gigantic fish were swimming behind us… the views weren’t so impressive once they turned off the lights though

CAoS’ signature ‘living roof’

i’m back in ann arbor, again!  this time for an alumni leadership conference, where i’ll get the in’s and out’s of the best practices at other alumni clubs around the US.  my good friend hak picked me up from the airport, and first order of business was sleep.  after i woke up though, second order was ajishin!

ah~ good old dtw!

ugh… i don’t understand, why are you so good?  definitely brings back memories of high school days with the fobs… especially the summer of 2001!

in previous visits to AA, i’ve always (with the exception of the one time i stayed with aaron at his hotel) stayed at a friend’s apartment.  but this time the conference gave me a dorm room at Mosher Jordan (mojo for short) to spend the weekend.  at first i was a bit hesitant and thought about just staying at my friend’s apt again, but soon realized it would be fun to stay in a dorm again.

these dorms are not the same dorms that i had almost a decade ago (dang, a DECADE ago?!).  they have been fully upgraded with central air, wood flooring, brand new desks/beds/dressers, and wireless internet throughout.  the cafeteria has also been fully upgraded with a brand new dining hall to support all the dorms in the hill area.

no joking around here.  stockwell is currently being renovated, and north quad will be completed in a few months.  upperclassmen are moving back into the dorms because it’s nicer than most apt’s in aa now.

random pictures of the campus on a beautiful day… a little humid actually, but still nice…

mmm~ jimmy johns so good, esp at 3 in the morning…

i wonder if there will ever be a day i visit aa without visiting no thai?

the cute couple

the other cute couple

sweet beer pong table… because it has the M on it, yes.

kpcmd!

where i learned english! and the bible… and taught korean, and the bible… wow, lots of history here.

the sweet gym.  almost missed my flight playing here till the very last second.  i got on the plane all sweaty and nasty… it was awesome.

the busy saturday started out with a michigan alumni volunteer event at the san francisco food bank.  this was my third time volunteering at the food bank (second with aaum), which made me feel like a bit of a veteran, but my first time packaging cereal.  i forgot exactly how much cereal they said we packed… but it was a lot.

the umich table

bagging cereal: scoop, bag, weigh, seal!

biggest box of cereal i’ve ever seen

after all the hard work (and some beer afterwards @ connecticut yankee), it was time for eurie and fb dan’s birthday party at cha cha cha!  good food, lots and lots of sangria, mmm~

group picture

lots of food, using the mussel and shrimp sauce with bread/rice was the best idea ever

some awesome nrb followed dinner, where the full korean cast let our frustration out with one kpop after another.

legendary

we followed up nrb with some partying at swig for darren’s birthday.  all in all, very long and exhausting day… but is there any other way to live life?!
