i completed my 3 day series with the chiropractor yesterday.  i’ve felt back discomfort since college, mostly if not all of it due to my bad posture.  i was recently delighted to hear that chiropractic care was included in my insurance plan, and with the remaining flex spending account it would be essentially free.  so no, i’m not a big cry baby nor am i rich… i just wanted to use my flex plan before it runs out dec 31st.

after seeing rave reviews on yelp, i made an appointment to visit dr. luck at rincon chiropractics in soma.  i feel like the realigning that he did was just so- so, but the massages were heavenly.  without insurance, the realignment would definitely not be worth the $55 or $75 that they charge, but the massage is worth every penny.

dr. luck changed his initial recommendations and asked me to come back next week (which i didn’t appreciate and found somewhat skeptic considering i was considered to be in excellent condition), i refused saying i was out of my flex spending for the year.  is my back all better?  not really… but i suppose i should just fix my posture.

we had our office holiday party today.  due to the economic conditions, we had a rather small party in our office.  although the party wasn’t glamorous by any means, it was a great opportunity to get to know others better.  the party was only supposed to run for an hour, but many of us ended up staying for several hours talking about things other than work.  i also learned that champagne is expensive… and that it will give you a buzz.  although the economy is expected to fair worse in 2009 than better, let’s hope for a quick recovery not necessarily for a better party, but for my job :)

i worked from our firm’s palo alto office this week, and although the commute was exhausting, it was a great experience.  i got a look at the caltrain for the first time and like all the other public transportation, i loved it.  for the most part the first day was a success, except i didn’t know you had to validate the ticket before boarding.  go me.  i gave the ticket lady ‘i’m real sorry, i’m a newb’ look, and she let me go.  phew~  the only painful part of the commute was monday’s after work, where i had to take a 2 hour commute palo alto to berkeley for a 3 hour class.  that is something i’d like to never ever do ever again.

i’ve gone with no car for almost a year now, and i’m loving it.  sf has a fairly good network of trains and buses, and i took advantage of all of them today. i traveled from sf (home) to palo alto (work) by caltrain, then to berkeley (class) by caltrain + bart, then back home by bart + muni, all for just under $20!! how wonderfully cheap, convenient, and effortless! with the approval of the california high-speed rail system that’ll provide transit from norcal to socal and vice-versa, the transportation system in california will only get that much better.

(commuting with the train felt like i was in some kind of movie, an old movie, but a movie nevertheless)

(nice view; on a side note, i sat on the left side of the caltrain and everytime the train on the other side passed, it scared the crap out of me.  i sat on the right side going forward)

(on my way from the station to the office; first time seeing red leaves this fall!)

(awesome palm trees)

(the pretty fountain at the office)

(make sure you validate your ticket!… this only applies to the 10-ride tickets btw)

(bart <–> caltrain; bart/caltrain transfer at millbrae)

(i missed cake on monday because i left early for class, but a coworker saved a slice for me! best coworker ever)

(in return, i gave pepero to everybody at work in honor of pepero day)

i’m not much of a festive halloween partier, but i never lived in sf before either.  since it seemed like everybody here was dressing up for a halloween party, i was planning on doing the same.  UNTIL… i realized i would have to get up bright and early for a 7 hour class at berkeley.  cancel the costume.  cancel the parties.

i did however, get a pleasant surprise at work when my supervisor treated us with a halloween cake.

(twas good cake)

(cake and coffee)

it was a quiet and early night for me.  hope everybody had a happy and safe halloween!

community service is awesome. it makes me feel all good an tingly inside knowing i helped somebody, even if it made a dent of a different. my firm had a volunteer outing last night where we helped the san francisco food bank pack and organize food for the non-profit organizations that prepare the food for the poor (got all that?). i’ve volunteered at soup kitchens multiple times, but never actually worked behind the scenes so it was pretty cool. to tell you the truth, i didn’t even know what a food bank was, but i guess i should’ve just inferred from the name of the place. we got a tour of the warehouse and got to learn how everything works. as you can imagine, food banks basically package and distribute food that is needed by soup kitchens and the like in order for them to prepare meals.

the first half consisted of packing tomatoes into boxes, and removing bad ones that supposedly gets donated to a pig farm. the second half consisted of sorting cans into proper categories. after a couple hours of labor, the firm sponsored beer and pizza at a restaurant nearby in potrero hill.

(volunteers hard at work)

(working hard to look good)

(i helped pack)

(second project)

(still working hard)

(beautiful night in the city)

(some drinks before pizza at lingba lounge)

(goat hill pizza, delicious)

a lot has happened since my last post (which is a bit disappointing considering i was so pumped to start a blog).

first of all, i now have a job. i work for a comprehensive wealth management firm. it’s a very exciting company for me because the firm’s philosophy of managing clients and client assets is very similar to mine. it’s also a comprehensive wealth management firm meaning they have a big picture when it comes to client assets, managing not only investments but also directing taxes, estate planning, insurance, philanthropic giving, etc. hopefully the “comprehensive” part of the firm will eventually allow me to fully put my current education to use and give me a greater understanding of wealth management as a whole.

(i live here…)

(… with this guy)

i have also moved out from aaron and will’s futon to a apt in japantown with chris. special thanks to aaron and will for letting me crash at their place for what probably seemed like forever. i’m going give a good attempt at writing investment logs from what happened in previous weeks, and hopefully i’ll be able to catch up to present times.
