Archive for October, 2011

Hojun, who is a very good FOB friend from back in Michigan recently moved to Oakland, so I took a special break from the no-alcohol-while-studying policy to welcome him to the Bay Area.  I drove across the bridge into Oakland for the first time in MONTHS… and we had a quality dinner/drinks catch-up time.  I’m glad to have a friend from back home nearby, and look forward to seeing him more often!

10/23/2011: First of many drinks with Hojun @ Holy Moly Cafe & Lounge.

10/23/2011: Great sunny day is not so great football weather. Flag football at Polo Fields in Golden Gate Park.

San Francisco has 10 days of summer, spread out through the year but usually concentrated towards the end of October.  In Michigan, we’d call this an Indian summer.  I’ve heard people here say that it’s their Indian summer, but considering it never really gets cold to boot, I don’t think that’s technically the right term to use.

Today, was one of those SF summer days.  People usually try to take full advantage by going outside, laying out at parks, playing sports, or just soaking in the sun walking around the city.

10/23/2011: SF'ers enjoying "Sunday Streets".

10/22/2011: Honestly, when is the last time you came across an actual dictionary?

I stopped… stared… touched it and smelled it.  I felt like I found a childhood toy, or like I had gone back in time to my middle school library.  When did dictionaries become obsolete?  And are books next?

10/19/2011: Sharing beer with coworkers for Roberta's good-bye party!

Today… I took a break from studying for Roberta’s going away party.  It’s always (well, not always…) sad to lose a coworker, but it’s especially sad when your firm is super small and it’s a person you worked closely with.  No one attempted the boot at Schroeders, but we drank enough beer to fill a few as a group.  Good luck to Roberta on her future endeavors!

10/14/2011: Water Fountain/Fall/Sculpture that stand between the Green & Meyer Libraries

On Friday, with the perfect-as-can-be weather, I couldn’t help but sit in front of this water fountain/fall/sculpture (I’m not quite sure what it is, or what to call it) and give it a good 30 minute stare.  It was relaxing, and pretty to look at- much more soothing than any books I’d have to go through today.  So… I cut my studying short and went up to the city to hang out with Jileebean who was in town for James’ wedding.  It was the first time I put on jeans in 3 weeks- I wasn’t sure if I was sad that my no-jeans streak had ended… or that it lasted 3 weeks.  Either way, it’s over.

Will coincidentally had a friend visiting from New York as well, so we took them to a couple bars in the Mission district.  Neither of us (Jean & I) could stay out too late, so we called it a night relatively early.  Like I’ve commented before, it’s always nice to see somebody from your hometown and a friend you’ve known for a long time.  It was also a welcomed break from studying, and I enjoyed my first beer in several weeks very, very much.

10/14/2011: Bathroom wall creatures @ Gestalt House

10/09/2011: Was it the viente size? Or maybe the extra shot... or perhaps all the sugar in the pumpkin spice mix? Whatever it was, it made for a very productive night (until I tried to sleep).

I had all but given up hope at the only 24-hour Starbucks in the city… but I had no choice but to give it another shot given the lack of places to study (as in NONE).  Besides, I had a free coupon for a drink, any drink, any size… even a free extra shot!  I found a seat as soon as I got there; foresight that it was going to be a productive day.  Add to that SB’s rollout of the most awesome and amazing drink- the Pumpkin Spice Latte-  made for an awesome way to waste the few remaining hours of my weekend studying.
