it’s been awhile since i’ve been to LA (going on 4 months!), and because SF has no decent korean food, the group took a trip after work to oakland.  we found ourselves at sahn maru; the food wasn’t cheap, and they cooked the meat for us in the kitchen, but it was pretty good nonetheless.  i’ve also been craving soju for sometime and this meal did the trick.

the banchan here was pretty good; lots of variety and tasty for the most part

unlike a lot of complaints on yelp, i thought the service was good.  free dwen-jang jjigae!

i prefer to cook my own meat but this was a nice change of pace

ssam!  bite of garlic in every bite~ gilroy! here we come!!!

chris was still hungry so we stopped by berkeley for some yogurt.  mmm~ yogurt/paht bing soo combo

1. i did not know you were supposed to fundraise for the aids walk, i thought you just walked to show support.

2. i did not know it was 10k, i thought it was a couple miles.

3. 1 + 2 made it for a very interesting and loooong sunday morning.

fortunately, a few awesome people (and much smarter than i) raised well over $1,500 for the AAUM team.  i was there for the moral support- and the breakfast.  walking 10k was no joke, the streets were lined with entertainers, supporters, and you couldn’t ask for better weather.  the walk raise over 3.5M dollars.

entertainers

thank you for the moral support, man in the brightest pink hat ever, aka phil.  will was also here, but missed out on seeing him

there were LOTS of people here

AAUM walkers got these awesome wrist bands

finished!

yay! i finally went up to sonoma for my first wine tasting experience.  i’ve had several opportunities before, but somehow missed ALL of them.  with ben’s expertise in planning and wines, i was lucky enough to just tag along and absorb the full experience.  we had planned on going to five wineries, but only made it to three; and three was plenty enough.

first stop! siduri wines, experts of pinot’s

yes, we tried all of them

apparently only ben listened to the guide

we later got to do some barrel tastings (as well as smelling), very cool~

our second destination was landmark (apparently started by the daughter of john deere!).  we picked up food at a local market and enjoyed bocce ball until the heat got to us

no explanation needed, we were very tired by sojourn

dinner at ‘the girl & the fig’.  it was still so-very hot while eating, but the sun slowed down and the weather was perfect by the end!

i finally got to revisit the california academy of sciences today after failing to get in on opening day.  i’m not sure if any other museums around the country offer this, but CAoS has something called “nightlife” where the museum essentially turns into a big lounge on thursday nights.  i didn’t get to drink much because i was busy taking pictures, but i can see how this place could be a much more interesting venue for a happy hour, as opposed to regular-old bars around the city.  the event was through the AAUM, so we also got a couple of special perks like reserved tickets to the planetarium and skipping long lines into the 4-story rainforest.

lots of fish here

floating around without cause or care… actually, maybe there is a cause… who knows?

it’s gill from nemo!!! (sans the scar)

CAoS’ signature albino alligator

budweiser frogs?

lots of lighting

inside the rainforest, the floor was made of glass- you can see people walking underground where you got to view the tank from the bottom

underground… that is not a black wall behind us, but a tank full of fish

these gigantic fish were swimming behind us… the views weren’t so impressive once they turned off the lights though

CAoS’ signature ‘living roof’

i used to bowl often in college (some may say a LOT), but have hardly bowled since then.  it probably has something to do with the fact that there is a lot more to do in cali, and that they don’t offer $1 bowling nights here.  regardless, it was the first time in a while that i went bowling on a weekday and i must say, it was a pretty chill and relaxing way to spend a tuesday evening; we should do this more often.

possibly the most high tech bowling lanes i’ve been to… complete with plasma screens and sophisticated instructions on how to approach the pins

it even called out SOS when the lane wouldn’t reset

bowling shoes are awesome

candid- we lost, i blame my teammate in the blue

july 11-12, 2009

it was a delicious weekend, but also one that included little more than sleeping and eating, with “little more” being rockband.  actually, rockband was surprisingly quite an exercise.  i played the drums until i could no longer move my legs, then the guitar until my fingers were cramping, and eventually i was left on the couch incoherently mumbling into the mic.  playing for that long, i was able to customize my character to look exactly like what i would want to look like if i was a real rock star (picture below).

sat lunch at osha thai… a little salty but still very good

haha, went over to a friend’s office and found this long lost game!  james and i used to play this for hours in our rooms, although neither of us know the exact rules

ikes so good

phil showing off his bbq sandwich

i forgot what mine was called, but it was delicious

can’t do without my strawberry milk! (and smart water)

yes… this is what i would look like… everything from the white gloves to the heart earrings

yes, i know, we’re awesome!

will likes to cook dinner every now and then… and he decided to throw one on sunday.  he said he would be cooking steaks… but i was not expecting a king sized NY strip.  thanks will (and phil) for the incredible dinner!!

i forgot what this was called… but it was good

a meal is never complete without the right beer pairing!

my contribution of the night… i cut the bread…

ginormous steak with mashed potatoes, salad, and brie… it was really good

july 4, 2009

i’ve basically used all my vacation days for the year already (days off for korea, exam, moving… sigh), so any holiday break is extra welcomed by me for the rest of 2009.  the mission boys had a bbq at their place (pretty much lasted all day), so i headed over there with my contribution of hot dogs and buns.  although i used to bbq all the time in college and LA, it’s fairly rare in sf in that there aren’t as many grills or backyards/decks where you can grill.  the bbq was good and relaxing times with waves of people coming and going.  big props to all the boys for hosting.

thumbs up indeed

their backyard is awesome

tex the cook

mmmm~

good stuff, bacon wrapped dogs with chili

my best friend at the bbq

i wanted to take advantage of the july 4th holiday by golfing… and luckily i was able to join ben and alex for a round at stonetree gc in novato, ca near sonoma.  the weather was perfect and the course was beautiful; it almost felt like we were playing right through the wineries at times.  it was one of the nicest (club cleaners on the carts, staff cleaning clubs after the round) and most difficult (lost 8 balls… GOSH) courses i’ve ever played and i can’t wait to go back for another shot ^^!

across the golden gate we go to north bay~ (always so foggy, the contrast between the sf side and the north bay side is really amazing)

there were lots of traps

beautiful course

sadly, my partner chris was not there this week… loner cart rider

beautiful/huge house… i want to live there

the awesome threesome- thanks for driving guys!
